Jim Young MD
"I love helping people when they need it most. Medicine lets me combine science, service, and meaningful connection."
Dr. James Young is a Family Medicine physician who provides care in Hudson Physicians Urgent Care. With over 21 years of experience, he brings strong clinical judgment, a calm presence, and a passion for helping people through both everyday concerns and unexpected medical needs.
Dr. Young earned his medical degree at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and completed his residency at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. He is board certified in Family Medicine, with broad interests that include clinician and medical staff wellness, disaster and emergency management, medical weight management, headache care, hospital medicine, and acute care medicine.
Why He Chose Hudson Physicians
From the moment he walked through the doors, Dr. Young felt Hudson Physicians was different.
The team environment, supportive culture, and shared sense of purpose immediately stood out.
He describes it as an “esprit du corps” - a positive energy rarely found in today’s increasingly corporatized medical systems. It was clear this was a place where he could practice medicine with joy and pride.
Why He Chose Medicine
Dr. Young has always loved biology and the life sciences. From an early age, he knew he wanted to use those passions to help others. Medicine became the natural path — and he’s never looked back.
Why He Chose His Specialty
For most of his career, Dr. Young worked in hospital medicine. But he missed office visits, seeing families, and caring for children, something uncommon in inpatient settings. Urgent Care brought him back to the variety, connection, and community-focused medicine he loves.
Personal Interests
Outside of work, Dr. Young is an avid fan of football and hockey.
He loves cooking on his pellet grill, exploring new recipes, and diving into history books — especially those about financial crimes, disasters, the Civil War, and the years between WWI and WWII.
He’s also a lifelong science fiction enthusiast and a proud Trekker. He enjoys biking, hiking, and spending time with family.
Fun Fact
Instead of a single fun fact, he shared “Two Truths and a Lie.” Ask him which one isn’t true at your next visit:
- He served in the U.S. Air Force with the Minnesota Air National Guard.
- He once met Neil deGrasse Tyson and had lunch with him.
- He helps with a small independent professional wrestling company in the Twin Cities.
His Approach to Health
Dr. Young believes the key to good health is balance and being willing to hold yourself accountable while also giving yourself compassion. He often shares the wisdom of Dr. Leonard McCoy from Star Trek, reminding people that out of all the galaxies and planets in the universe, there is only one of each of us.
To him, that means life is a gift, and something we should find ways to celebrate every day. That celebration can look different for everyone. It might be going to the gym, taking a walk, making a healthy meal, or simply sitting in bed to watch the sunrise.
His advice is simple: whatever you do, do it well, do it in moderation, and enjoy every second.
