John Murphy MD
"The best medical advice is often the advice people can actually live with."
Dr. John Murphy is a board-certified Family Medicine physician with more than 25 years of experience caring for people of all ages. He believes good healthcare doesn't have to be complicated. By focusing on prevention, healthy habits, and practical advice, he helps people make changes they can maintain for a lifetime.
Growing up in a medical family, Dr. Murphy saw firsthand the satisfaction that comes from caring for others. That experience inspired him to pursue a career in medicine, where he could combine science, problem-solving, and meaningful relationships with patients.
He chose Family Medicine because it allows him to care for a wide variety of people and medical conditions. Combined with his experience in Emergency Medicine, he enjoys helping patients with everything from acute illnesses and injuries to preventive care and chronic disease management.
Returning to the St. Croix Valley was a natural decision. Dr. Murphy grew up in Stillwater, raised his children there, and has always loved the St. Croix Valley. He was excited to join Hudson Physicians because of its strong reputation and the opportunity to be part of the new Stillwater location.
Dr. Murphy's special medical interests include acute illness and injury management, preventive medicine, hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular risk reduction, and healthy aging and geriatric care. He enjoys partnering with patients to help them stay healthy, active, and independent throughout every stage of life.
Success Story from Dr. Murphy
One of the most meaningful moments of Dr. Murphy's career came when his own father, a retired general surgeon, arrived in the Emergency Department with an acute abdomen caused by a life-threatening condition. Dr. Murphy rapidly assessed and stabilized him, coordinated emergency surgery, and helped ensure he received the care he needed. His father made a full recovery.
While he has cared for thousands of patients throughout his career, this experience reinforced the importance of staying calm under pressure, making thoughtful clinical decisions, and never losing sight of the person behind the patient.
Outside of work, Dr. Murphy enjoys boating, traveling, working around the yard, and spending time with his family and grandchildren.
His advice for staying healthy is refreshingly practical. Stay physically active by walking most days of the week while maintaining your strength and mobility. Eat real food most of the time, including vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, and whole grains, while limiting highly processed foods and sugary drinks. Prioritize quality sleep, stay connected with family and friends, and don't skip preventive care. Regular checkups, recommended screenings, and vaccinations often prevent problems or catch them early, when they're easiest to treat.
