Michael Koeplin MD, FACS
"I enjoy working in a smaller community where I get to know the patients that I treat…."
General Surgeon Michael Koeplin, M.D. is a fan of forming relationships, which is why the community of Hudson and Hudson Physicians clinic is such a great match for him. This setting allows him to focus on relationship-building – getting to know his patients personally and working collaboratively with his colleagues.
Loving the challenge to help others and make a difference in their lives, Dr. Koeplin started his medical journey at Northwestern University, followed by additional education at the University of Missouri School of Medicine. His residency brought him to the Twin Cities and the Hennepin County Medical Center. He received his board certification from the American Board of Surgery in 1995.
He applies his 27 years of practice and experience at Hudson Physicians. Trained in a broad knowledge of diseases, conditions, and procedures, Dr. Koeplin’s specialties include the following surgeries: abdominal, breast, endocrine, hernia, and laparoscopic. He is particularly interested in hernia repairs, gallbladder surgeries, spinal exposure surgeries, and outpatient surgeries. “I like the variety of services I perform being a General Surgeon,” he says.
His breast cancer patients have specifically made an impact on him and represents why he is so passionate about relationship-building. Dr. Koeplin says, “It's caring for [the patients] during one of the scariest times of their lives, following them through their care, seeing them and celebrating them as long-term survivors. We get to know one another on a personal level which brings me joy.”
Besides the community atmosphere of the area, Dr. Koeplin chose Hudson Physicians as it is an independent practice that values its’ independent providers. Much like his desire to familiarize himself with his patients, he values that his workplace environment encourages and fosters professional relationships among the staff and providers. He has a deep appreciation for the clinic model as it allows him to have a direct impact on institutional decisions.
Dr. Koeplin’s personal advice on staying healthy is straightforward – stay mentally and physically active and seek out new challenges. He follows this decree by spending time with his family, fly-fishing, and upland bird hunting. His own personal challenge was completing the Athens-to-Atlanta Road Skate Event, an 87-mile rollerblading race through Georgia. He finished in an impressive seven hours!
