Diabetes Doesn’t Wait, and Neither Should You
What if a small change this December helped you feel better all year long?
That’s the heart of National Diabetes Month: reminding us that even small steps—like a check-up or changing your drink choice—can lead to big improvements in how you feel.
At Hudson Physicians, we meet with patients every day who are trying to manage blood sugar, understand their numbers, and make sense of what it all means.
Some are newly diagnosed.
Others have been living with diabetes for years.
But one thing they all have in common?
They want to feel better—and we’re here to help.
What Is Diabetes?
Diabetes is when your body has trouble using sugar (glucose) from food the right way. It happens when there isn’t enough insulin, or the insulin isn’t working how it should.
This makes blood sugar levels rise too high.
There are different types:
- Type 1 diabetes usually starts when you’re young
- Type 2 diabetes often shows up later, sometimes with no symptoms at first
- Prediabetes means your blood sugar is higher than normal—but not quite diabetes yet
No matter what type you have, there’s good news: With the right tools and support, diabetes can be managed.
Our Diabetes Education Team Is Growing
Managing diabetes can feel overwhelming, but you’re not alone.
At Hudson Physicians, our Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSMES) program is here to help you understand your condition and take small, manageable steps toward better health.
Whether you’ve just been diagnosed or have lived with diabetes for years, our team is here to support you with care, education, and tools that work for your life.
You can even bring a spouse or family member to appointments—they’re part of your journey too.
New Providers. More Support. Better Care.
We’re excited to welcome Dr. Kheng Joe Lau, an adult endocrinologist, to the Hudson Physicians team. His addition brings expanded care options for adults managing diabetes and other endocrine conditions. Starting this month, he’ll see patients on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month.
Dr. Lau joins Dr. Jennifer McVean, our pediatric endocrinologist, who continues to provide care to children and teens managing Type 1 diabetes and other hormonal conditions.
Together, our endocrinology team works alongside our educators and family medicine providers to deliver comprehensive diabetes care for all ages, right here in Hudson.
Whether it’s helping a teen manage a new diagnosis or adjusting medications for an adult living with diabetes for decades, our team is here to support your care across every life stage.
Services We Offer Include:
- Diabetes education for Type 1 (ages 18+) and Type 2 (all ages)
Prediabetes support - Help starting insulin or oral medications
- Training on continuous glucose monitors (CGMs)—devices that track your blood sugar without finger pricks—and insulin pumps
- Annual reviews and extra visits when your care plan changes

Why Your Feet Matter Too
Here’s something many people don’t realize: Diabetes can affect your feet before you even notice it.
When blood sugar stays high for too long, it can lead to nerve damage (called neuropathy) or poor circulation. That means cuts or sores on your feet might not heal like they used to—or worse, you may not even feel them.
That’s why regular foot checks are so important. Our Podiatry Team is trained to look for early signs of trouble like numbness, tingling, or small wounds. Catching these things early helps prevent serious problems down the road.
